Product Description

In 1949, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company (Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS for his company in 1977, based on a famous Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," which, when translated, expresses the ancient ideal of "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body." Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS was founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness. Today, ASICS offers a full line of performance-driven athletic shoes and technical active sports apparel and accessories dedicated to bringing harmony to the body and soul.

It's been a few years since I bought my first pair of Gel-Rockets, and I'm still buying and wearing them today. They are super comfortable, and they provide great grip on just about any playing surface. I'm not real tall (5'11"), but I jump fairly high so I often have some fairly hard landings. These shoes seem to provide me with plenty of cushion when landing. I usually wear them indoors for about a year and then buy another pair. I'm hard on my shoes (especially the insides near the big toe), so they might last a little longer for someone who plays a more casually. I usually end up ripping the insoles out before I wear through them too much, and then I will throw another insole/insert in there and use them for our outdoor hard surface league during the summer. The only surface I wouldn't recommend using them on is grass. They are really slippery on grass.
Basically, they are a good, comfortable volleyball shoe, and the price is right. You could buy a $100+ pair of Asics of Mizunos, but I don't think you would see enough of a performance increase to justify spending the extra money unless you are really a professional. I could be wrong, but most serious players will probably go through a shoe, regardless of its cost, with a year of steady playing.
I tried the HEAD Sonic shoes because they come in a mid cut but those gave me my first case of plantar fasciitis in my right foot, so I was forced to dump them, but the lighter weight was definitely a plus. So, what next?
Coincidentally I noticed that a lot of guys in the league I play in seemed to be suddenly wearing Asics shoes in the various models - Flashpoint, Sensei, Gel 7 etc. and the feedback was that all the models came somewhat large, and wider. I tried them all and for me the Gel 7 is the answer. The cushioning is outstanding, plantar fasciitis not a problem now, even after I play. My forefoot feels just comfortable enough in the 12D size i bought. I normally wear a 11.5 2E. in NB shoes. Overall the Gel7 is a solid, light weight shoe with excellent traction and for a wide foot, an OK fit.
I am on my fifth pair. As long as the price does not change and they continue to last six months I will probably just continue buying these good shoes.
UPDATE:
I am now on my fourth pair of these shoes. They fit well, give me good grip and support. They are not too expensive. And, now I know that they will last between 5 and 6 months before the soles wears out. I play or drill for about eight hours a week, squash.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
They are mostly comfortable. This is my second pair. They are narrow around the front, squishing my pinky toe. I will wear heavy socks to stretch them out a bit.
Update: they wear out rather quickly.
I have had these shoes for 3.5 months and they have worn out on the sole and the toes where the sole connects to the top of the foot. I use them only for squash. I put them on and take them off at the gym, so they've never seen cement. I calculated that they have gotten about 95 hours of use. I do not know what is the expected lifetime for squash shoes. But, these seems a little low. Otherwise, the tops and insides are in perfect condition. Maybe these are better off for sports other than squash.
I normally wear 10D (medium) and these fit perfectly. My foot actually measures 10C, but those are impossible to find and I have worn D forever. My wife has a nerve problem in her foot and needs a wider shoe, so she wears women's 8-1/2 D (wide). Since men's medium is D and there is normally a 1-1/2 size difference between men's and women's shoes, she decided to order the 7D men's. They are also a perfect fit for her. We put PowerStep inserts in both shoes for extra support. I wear those in all my shoes and she wears orthotics in shoes that she will wear all day.
We have only used them for 1 time playing for about 2 hours, but they were comfortable and gave a good grip on the vinyl flooring that we play on a lot. I haven't used them on a wood gym floor yet, but I expect they will work fine.
