After many years of playing in squash leagues in Philadelphia and New York, I’m proud to say I finally am part of a winning league team! I think between my years in both cities, my team lost in the finals of the playoffs about 5 times. This year, we managed to win it all.
Our finals win came despite me losing my match. I played a guy in great shape, a former A player who is just getting back into the game. He played a very tight and controlled match the whole way through, always holding onto the T tenaciously and never getting sloppy with his footwork. Although I won the first game, it was a grind-out battle, and I knew I was in trouble. He won the next two games fairly easily. In the fourth game, he had an early lead, but I managed to turn things around simply by telling myself, “I’ve got him right where I want him”. This was a total lie but somehow, it actually helped! I went up game point and had a chance to take the fourth. It was not to be though, as he played three strong points to finish me off.
Luckily my teammates played brilliantly. Both of the other matches were battles to the finish. The matchups were very even skill-wise. I thought the other team had a very slight advantage in both matches. Nevertheless, my teammates pulled it out, to take the finals 2-1!
