Over the last 3 days we did a giveaway of a Tecnifibre squash racket to coincide with the US Open squash tournament. Big thanks to everyone who entered and shared the word about the giveaway — over 600 people!
The question: how to choose a winner from among these 600 worthy entrants? A piece of software that selects the winner randomly? No, that would be too easy.
Instead we decided it would be more fun to have a Tecnifibre player choose the winner of the giveaway. But then to make it EVEN MORE fun, we pitted TWO Tecnifibre players against each together in a Battle of Epic Proportions. Here’s a video we took of the battle:
What Happened
The Battle of the Bucket was contested between World Number 21 Gregoire Marche and up-and-coming talent Hamed El Sherbini, at a secret location right outside the US Open facility on the grounds of Drexel University.
Their challenge was to hit a squash ball into a fancy ice bucket from a distance. Except instead of being filled with ice, the bucket was filled with hundreds of slips of paper with the entrants’ names on them.
The first player to hit the ball into the bucket would earn the prestigious honor of selecting the winner of the giveaway from among the hundreds of hopefuls. Hamed won the racket spin and the right to go first.
The idea was for each player to take TURNS hitting into the bucket, but Hamed, a shotmaker at heart, took a second attempt straight away — and sank it!
This was immediately reviewed by the rules committee, who determined that in the Spirit of Fun, as well as the Spirit of Keeping the Video Short, Hamed would be declared the winner unless Greg could sink a shot in fewer attempts — meaning he would have to make it on his first attempt. Despite a courageous effort from Greg, plus a few extra attempts for fun, it wasn’t to be, and it was Hamed who pulled the winner’s name out of the bucket.
Big thanks again to everyone who entered the contest, to the players for participating, to Alex and the crew at Tecnifibre for helping to set up this event, and to my trusty 7-year-old Squash Source assistant Rowan. And congrats to Sarah Burrill, our giveaway winner.
