Black Knight Great White Surge

The Black Knight Great White Surge squash racket came out 2016. At that time it was called the “Black Knight Great White Singles”, but Black Knight seems to have changed the name in 2018.

Advertised weight (unstrung): 125 grams
Head size: 495 cm sq
String pattern: 14x19

Product Notes

This racket is a teardrop shape with a fan stringing pattern. There’s also the Black Knight Great White Doubles, which is a traditional head shape racket meant for hardball doubles.

The “Great White” was former world #1 John White’s nickname. I guess these are his signature rackets.

Picked up a used/like new of this model from Ebay and have been impressed. Light as a feather but substantial on impact with excellent power and very good control. The thin frame design makes tight corner and wall pick ups a breeze. I’ve always been impressed with Black Knight durability and hopefully this continues.

    Pierre or anyone,

Is Black Knight still in business? Their US and Canada social media accounts haven’t been updated in a very long time. They haven’t released new frames in nearly 2 years and many retailers seem to be out of a lot of their frames. Sam Cornett moved to Harrow just before retirement and Selby is now also playing with Harrow. I hope that’s not the case but the pandemic has been tough on squash in general.

First of all, I have been lurking here for some months now for this site provides some very useful information.

I am probably just an intermediate player who have been playing socially for some years but only started club circuit a few months back. Head-light rackets are my preference at the moment as I felt less agile with head-heavy rackets that was >10yrs old. So, I may not be the best person to provide a good review on this but I’ll try since there’s only a review so far and it’s by PDH.

I have recently purchased this GWS 125 racket and briefly played with it yesterday on solo practice. It definitely feels great. I feel I am able to hit quite deep without too much effort though with higher tension (I read some where it’s 27lb but can’t find it now) than what I currently used (25lb on old Head Cyano Power 135 as primary racket, same Supernick ZX string). It definitely feels lighter than Carboflex 125S which I have as spare. I felt I struggled a little with the 125S being less agile and a tad head-heavy but it might just be I need more time getting used to it.

I felt that I have better control with GWS 125 but it could also be the higher tension. I could also drive tighter to the sidewall but occasionally hitting slightly towards the right with backhand. Could it be its stiffer than the much older Head racket or it’s just me?

I will be having more hit with this GWS 125 as well as 125S for comparison.

The RAD grip doesn’t have the same sticky feel to the Karakal. That’s probably the only negative. Having said that, it’s better than Carboflex 125S’s original grip.

Also aesthetically, there are some minor paint leakages near the throat.

    Others:
    – The grip on mine is black instead of white as shown on this site
    – Stencil on mine is “bk” instead of the knight logo

    Hope this is helpful.
