I have a pair of the original Race R1s and I love ’em. Awesome design, very comfortable, and they have held up very well. My only problem with them has been that they are, honestly, the stinkiest pair of squash shoes I have ever owned. I don’t feel like the shoes get particularly hot or anything (they’re very breathable) so I don’t know why that happens. I got some of those sneaker balls to reduce the odor a bit, and that works.

Jeff at Control the T said these were “very comfortable” and “very light”.

I’ve gone back to the R1 2.0 (purple version) after a few years in the Adidas Stabil 11 and the Asics Fastball 2 and I’m so glad to have these again. Out of the box comfort is out of this world good. My last pair of R1s got me through over a year of coaching and playing and I’d expect these to do the same (I play 3-5 times a week). I’ll be stocking up on the R1s/RX model if rumors of their demise turn out to be true.

      Hey Rod,

I’m going to try R1 2.0 as my Adidas Stabil 11 is almost getting to the end of it’s life.

Did you find much variation in the sizing between the two?

I wear UK 11/EUR 46 in Stabils so I was going to try the same size in R1.

      Any thoughts on sizing?

Hey Kurabi. I was a US 14 in both. The Salming fits a little wider than the Stabil but not by much.

I have heard that Salming will discontinue the Race line of squash shoes in favor of the Adder, Viper, and Kobra. This is a terrible idea as the the Race has a different Last on the foot shape vs. the other shoes. The excessive build up of material (plastic/rubber) on the instep ball of the foot on all 3 remaining shoes in their line up really change the fit of the shoe. If you love your Race shoes, I think we need to contact Salming to maintain the model in their squash shoe line. I’ve been playing in the Race models since they came out and they fit and play great. Thoughts?

        Hi Brian,

Thanks for the reply. Do you work for Salming? There are only 2 shown on Salming website (https://www.salming.com/us/squash/men/shoes/race/c-365). The RED ones (R1 3.0) are not there. The inventory around the world is also very low.

        Thanks,

Has anyone compared the various Race R1 2.0 models?

Weird thing is: the light blue Race R1 2.0 (which I had before my current R1 3.0) have the polyester LMS plate on the mid-/outsole, just like the R1 3.0 (and the purple R1 2.0, judging on the pics).
I just bought a pair of yellow R1 2.0’s on sale, but they don’t seem to have the LMS plate!

Does anyone know anything about this?

        Yep, that’s the one, Pierre.

If you compare that image to one of this light blue Race R1 2.0, you’ll see the difference:

Then compare it to an image of this navy Race R2 3.0 for instance and you’ll see that the Yellow R1 2.0 seems to have the exact same mid/outsole construction as the R2’s and not his R1 brothers:

        Quiet a mystery 😀
I will try the Yellow ones on court asap, to see if I experience any differences!

Ah, so all the Race R1 2.0s have that cool carbon-looking LMS plate, except for the yellow version, which seems to be constructed more like the R2 2.0s.

Seems like Salming has updated their site and now all their shoes are the next version(s). I’m guessing the shoes have a TBA release as it’s still listed as coming soon.

Anyways, here’s the Race R1 3.0s they have on their site. Really like the color scheme of them.

    From Robert via email:

I was looking at getting these and e-mailed the company to ask what the differences between the Race R1 and Race R2 are. I know this has been discussed on your blog before. Here’s the answer they gave, I thought it may be of interest

The R1 are more stabil in the midpart of the shoe since it has our LMS unit wich is placed “thrue” our midsole. You can spot it under the shoe, this is an extra stabilizer when you move fast in irregular movements.

Also the R1 comes with a little bit more cushioning and some small benefits on the inside of the uppermaterial that provides you with a little bit more comfort.

Personally I’ve compared the soles of the R1s and R2s and I can’t see a visible difference, but there may be more than meets they eye.

I think the Salmings are a little wider. I am normally 11.5 US and have been wearing an 11.5 US Salming and the fit is great, very comfortable. It’s been a while since I wore Asics but I remember them feeling a little narrower. Some readers have recommended going down a half size though.

Well I’ve owned a pair of the R1 2.0 for about 5 months. I play 1-2 a week at a ‘B’ level. These are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. The downside, the comfort comes at cost. They break down really easily. I’ve blown through a pair already. For the fleet footed out there, I doubt you’ll have an issue. For the stomping beasts like myself, prepare to replace once a season. Your call.

Hi Pierre, could you possibly find out about the Salming Race R3 shoes in detail? They look almost exactly like the R1s, with just different branding. They’re meant for juniors and only go up to size 7 US, whereas the regular R1s only go down to size 7.5 US. But I have tiny feet (7 US) and want to try Salming, so I’d like to have a general idea of how these are.

For anybody downunder, I’ve finally found a stockist in Australia. Floorball Culture in Western Australia at http://www.floorballculture.com.au/
I’ve never even heard of floorball but it seems they’re mad for Salming gear. Probably a bit expensive if you’re not 100% sure about the sizing as others have stated above.

There is a difference between R1 2.0 and R2. The tongue on the R1 2.0 is attached to the footbed with a mesh as the R2 have a free-floating tongue. I have had my R1 2.0 for about 5 months and enjoyed putting them on each time (4-5 x a week). They just recently tore on the outside where the toe box attaches on the 4th/5th toe. They still hold the foot perfectly in place. When you get a super light weight shoe, expect them not to be as durable. I am still ordering another pair.

Here’s an explanation of the main difference, being the tongue of the shoe, which is sort of “loose” on the R2 and connected to the sole on the R1, which sort of wraps it around your foot: https://www.squashsource.com/salming-race-r2/

Also, my Race R1 3.0’s have a visible polyester plate (with a carbon look), which they call LMS and acts like a torsion plate.

    Hi,
I’m not sure if this is the right place but I’m facing an issue with salming court shoe sizes.
I bought a Salming XLite, Size EUR 42.5 (same as UK8 or US 9 having a Footbed Length of 27CM). But this show is lose for me. It has a lot of space at the front part for my toe.
To paint a better picture I have a space of 1Cm from the tip of my toe to the inner front end of the shoe. This according to me is a lot of space (should not be more than 0.5CM).
And all my shoes that fit me right are of the same 27CM length, no matter what EUR size I take (Including Hi-Tec Infinity Flare).
Now If I had gone for a size of EUR 42 / 26.5 CM for Salming Xlite shoe, I’m not sure but, it might be tight along the width of the shoe.
Now I want to go for salming Race and I’m very confused about the size. To go for Size EUR 42.5 / 27CM or EUR 42 / 26.5CM for Race.
Since this is a Online purchase order I cannot try these out actually.
It would also be helpful to receive the sizing chart for Salming Race & Xlite shoes with both relative length of the footbed and the width of the shoe with respect to it EUR sizes.

    Please help.

A couple of the retailers have a notice saying that Salming shoes are toughly ½ size larger than equivalently sized Hi Tec shoes. I’m very interested in this shoe. I spoke with several people wearing that brand this weekend. They all thought Salming was a great shoe but cautioned me to make sure to try them on before buying.

That’s unfortunate because there are apparently no stores carrying
Salming in either London or Los Angeles, which are the two places where I usually am.

I suggest that you return the shoes and either get your money back or a smaller size.

For size, the Orange Race R1’s run big on sizes, so order 1/2- 1 US size down.
All other Race R1’s are true to size.
