Reviews

Here’s my review of Dunlop’s 2018 Precision Ultimate. In short it’s a very smooth-hitting racket:

Here’s a roundup / comparison between the 2018 Precision Ultimate and the other 2018 Dunlop rackets, the Precision Pro 130, Precision Elite, and the Hyperfibre+ Pro Lite:

Here’s some feedback from Paul at PDH Sports:

Also: Stuart, one of the pros at my club, plays with the original Precision Ultimate. He had a hit with this new one and his initial reaction was that he liked it and thought it was similar.

Spotted

The 2018 frame incorporates some of the Hyperfibre material we’ve seen in other rackets of theirs, though this is still considered part of Dunlop’s Precision range as opposed to their Hyperfibre range.

Diego Elias uses the Precision Ultimate…

…however upon closer inspection, you can see that the stringing pattern of Diego’s racket is 14×18, which is the pattern for the Dunlop Precision Elite and not the Ultimate. In other words he’s got an Elite painted to look like an Ultimate. I’m not sure why they don’t just make Diego the face of the Elite.

Here’s the original Dunlop Precision Ultimate. This first came out in the middle of 2016 as Dunlop’s replacement for the Dunlop Ultimate GTS.

Reviews

Here’s my review. I really liked this racket — it was my favorite of the 2016 Dunlop Precision rackets.

Here’s how this compares to the other Dunlop Precision rackets:

Not sure if this link will work, but this is one of the photos from the British Open, quite clearly a new ultimate paintjob (clearly marked) with string pattern from the Elite.

I think we’re due for a new slate of the Ultimate/Elite/Pro models this summer, as they seem to come out every 2 years. So that’s probably the new cosmetic we’re seeing in Diego’s hand.

That’s weird about the stringing pattern. Diego could be playing with a painted model, but that seems unlikely to me. Maybe Dunlop got rid of the Elite and renamed it the Ultimate — although that also sounds implausible to me.

Is this the new Elite cosmetic? Can’t remember any previous versions that it looks like…

Pretty sure that’s the old Biomimetic Elite (came before the Biomimetic Elite GTS):

          https://www.squashsource.com/dunlop-biomimetic-elite/

The top of the head is normally white, but Gaultier’s is black inside the frame because he has it sanded down to increase the headlight feel (it’s still white on the outside).

This is why he often checks his racquet frame at the head during matches. They are more prone to cracking.

I disagree with D, I’m pretty sure that is the current precision elite as he’s almost always been holding it in promotional shots. The old 2013 elite that Gaultier has his painted like has more stripes.

Yeah, I think it’s the current Precision Elite looking again. The yellow bits in the throat, and the right side of the head.

Ah, the promotional shots? I was referring to all the live action pictures after it.

The promotional shots look exactly like the current Precision Elite (like you two mentioned), and I didn’t think those were the photos in doubt!

The racket in question is an elite model with the complete decals from the ultimate model. It even states the wrong string numbers and weight on the frame.
It’s obviously in an attempt to sell
          More ultimates.
I know this for a fact.

Diego Elias seems to be promoting the new Dunlop Ultimate model in the British Open. The string pattern though is 18 x 14 , rather than the traditional 19×16. Is it a case of Elias using an Elite frame , with an Ultimate paint job? Shabana used to do the same thing when he promoted the Ultimate.

Sneaky! With no pros “using” the Ultimate since Shabana’s departure, and Gaultier playing with the Elite for a decade now (but really, using the old Hotmelt with changeable handle repainted every year like the Elite), Dunlop must have switched Elias over for marketing purposes.

I would bet he’s using the Elite still.

If you check every high res photo of his racquet over the past decade, including the 2018 British, you’ll notice the bulge at the top of the handle, underneath his grip.

That’s the same distinctive bulge from the ice custom Elite with changeable handle. No other racquet had that.

Nooooo he’s not using the hotmelt at all who informed you of this. I had some photos taken with him at the 2017 allam open and he lent me a racket the same as his out of his bad in the car park and believe me it’s not the hotmelt at all its the Biomimetic elite for sure as he gave me on to raffle off for the Addison’s disease society so I had the racket until the following January 2018 & 100% not a hotmelt with the changeable handles its not even the same shape frame its hot a far smaller gap above the handle (The V)

In last year’s Allam British Open, he had the same racquet as this year. I wonder if yours has the same bulge in the handle?

          https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPmpvVZnF-j1KDPLipLof64mGNE3L4mClUXaNS8G41AvfUwSmSIXgDCe-AJA4aNFA/photo/AF1QipN8qfLp4hMtA6h6jpRndArAnkcQOByhMOpo33I?key=ZFp6VmJlZmVKd2pLTTVqcGRsZmx2SnlQNUJndk5n

You’ll also notice the indentations at the bottom of the racquet head, similar to the Ice Custom Elite.

Many pro stringers have confirmed that Gaultier still plays with the ice custom elite, or something very similar specially made for him since the model is discontinued a long time ago. At one point this season he played a tournament with a batch of new rackets that were all black and unpainted but yet looked like ice elites, so Dunlop still makes them new just for Gaultier. I don’t understand why Dunlop doesn’t release a true special edition Gaultier racket with his exact frame and specs, they could ask a fortune and people would still buy.

Hi Pierre, thanks for the great reviews!

I’m using an old Dunlop Pro Tour Revelation (14×18, 470 cm2 head) that I love. It’s 185g including strings and overgrip, with close to even weighting, which helps me carve out my swing and get good power with a slower swing. It’s getting beat up so I’m looking for a new model that will feel similar. Any suggestions? Thanks!

You’re welcome Jimmy! I’m not too familiar with that frame but I think the closest is going to be the Dunlop Hotmelt Pro or the Precision Pro 130.

I demoed them using the factory strings. If I were playing with them regularly I would restring with a higher-end string to increase the power. The stock Dunlop strings have feel but not enough power for my weak arms.
